My Life Is Weird
Funny story: I never realized that my compulsions and constant, crippling anxiety brought on by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder could be interpreted as showing off.

Let's call my little sister and tell her we know that her craniofacial birth defect is just an elaborate plan to get the insurance company to cover her nose job. OH OH OH and when we're done, we can tell my transgender brother that he just wanted to have a cool gender identity.

Man, my parents should NOT have reproduced.

A face needing a name.
Hello again! :)

I have a few icons I've saved for various persons over the years. Sometimes they're stock or fashion models and I can't really hold out much hope, but other times I just can't recall the name of the person. (Dummy that I am!) So beneath the cut you'll find my hopeful attempt at rediscovering a name!

Icons under here. )

17 hours of reading journal articles make me bitchy? no!
Pet peeve of today: scientists who can't use words correctly but are allowed to publish anyway.

A brief guide to penultimate, cf., ca., inflammable, and ambivalent

PENULTIMATE

pene- before or almost
ultimate the last of something

what penultimate means. next to last.

what penultimate does NOT mean. some step further than ultimate. that would make the word ultimate pointless.

CF.

what it is. from Latin confer, meaning to compare or consult. It is intended to provide a reference to some other work against which one might compare the current work -- that is, it is meant to be used to indicate a source with different arguments, data, or conclusions.

what it isn't. A substitute for "see" in the "see Figure 1" sense. You do not say cf. Figure 1. EVER.

CA.

what it is. from Latin circa, meaning 'around.' It is used to refer to dates.

what is isn't. a go-to substitute for 'approximately,' particularly in the 'approximately 100nm thick' sense.

INFLAMMABLE

in into
flammable lol obviously

what inflammable means. combustible, flammable, settable on fireable

what inflammable does NOT mean. nonflammable. come on guys you do this for a living.

this is not a science mistake but it bugs me anyway so I'm throwing it in.

AMBIVALENT

ambi both
valence the capacity of a person to react with another in a special way

what ambivalent means. uncertainty, caused by having to make a choice or by conflicting/opposite emotions.

what ambivalent does NOT mean. indifferent, apathetic. STOP. USING. IT. LIKE. THIS.

MLIA - neo version
Today, after an hour of mysterygoogling with Livi, I got really bored and put in this:

"Casey/Ira/Tash = OT3"

The response?

"aids are delicious like aborted fetuses"

MLIA.

Oookay, so I have this idea, and I need your help. Icons not needed, just pictures.

I'm looking for a 40+ woman, preferably on the later end of the 40s spectrum. Good looking. Not necessarily sexy, but someone who has aged gracefully. Caucasian, (preferably short) brown hair, blue eyes, and not someone who has been botoxed and nipped and tucked until they look like a cartoon character. Sorry, Janice Dickinson. I want someone who at least has a few laugh lines.

Think Lisa Edelstein, but with short hair. And ideally (read: the more qualifications I put up, the less likely this is going to happen), someone not all that well known. I just like the lesser knowns.

If there's someone close to that, try me. I've been looking off and on all day and no one's clicked, so maybe I'm just being too picky with these restrictions!

If this semester doesn't kill me, it means that I am an invincible sparklepire who forgot how to sparkle.

Right now, I am stubbornly procrastinating on a reflective piece that's due tomorrow night because somehow, in the midst of getting sick, I didn't manage to get the handout describing what, exactly, we're supposed to do with this assignment, and how and so on. I fully intend to half-ass something at some point tomorrow, since my professor is amazing and lets us rewrite anything that we don't get an A on (yay!), but I really hate half-assing, but I don't know what choice I have at this point.

Once that is done (and by "once that is done" I mean "tomorrow night") I have to sit down and make the edits on my ESL editing project and e-mail them over to my client. Then I have to find a time to sit down and chat with that client and talk about the suggested edits, and once we've done that (if we can even do that in the week before this project is due), I have to write another reflective piece (I hate reflective pieces) about my experience here. I suspect it will largely consist of "Anyone who would do this for a living is out of their ever-loving minds."

Once that is done, I will be holing myself up in UNT's library and finishing off my final project for my Principles of Technical Communication class (a 13-15 page thesis paper that will be my attempt to marry Plato's ideas of Absolute Truth with the Sophists' ideas of subjective language). This is simultaneously my biggest and smallest worry...biggest because I did the research for it all the way back in the beginning of the semester, and it was only half the research...so I'm basically doing this all very last minute, and living up to the Oxonian motto of "Procrastination is merely the realization that true genius is forged in the white hot flames of crisis." On the other hand, though, this is exactly what I did for 100 days in Oxford, and even though I only managed a B-minus there, I survived, and that was on zero prior knowledge and in Oxford.

Now I know a little bit more about my subject than I did and it's just a question of getting it to do tricks for me. I know that once I get my ass into gear, it's going to probably be one of the best academic pieces I've ever written and I'll be damn proud of it, but until then...YEEEEEEE PANIC!!

Anyway.

Once that is done, it's on to my final editing project. I'm editing a "sensitive" article of my dad's (read: I can't tell you what it's about or I'd have to kill you) that's 15 pages long and will hopefully be enough work for my professor to be like "Sweet deal, here's an A for you." I'm half-worried about that, but I'm trying to leave that worry behind.

And then I'm done for the semester and going home for a month. Woot!

So here are my dates...

November 24 - Collaborative Exercise Reflection
December 1 - ESL Editing Project
December 8 - Final project for Principles
December 10 - Final project for Editing

I'm debating whether or not to take a hiatus between December 1 and December 10. I kind of don't want to because RPing is such a nice vent for me when I'm bashing my head on the keyboard thinking "WHAT DO I WRITE NOW????" but I think I probably should and will, save for BAMF stuff. And applying for someone at BW, whenever holds open, of course.

Sigh. Graduate school. I am so very very glad that BL ended before you began.
